Water Development, Sanitation and Environmental Protection Minister Raphael Nakachinda has called for harmonised assessment of developments around the Zambezi River source.
Mr. Nakacinda says development in the area is important but at the same time the water source needs to be protected.
Speaking when he visited the Zambezi River source in Ikeleng’i District, Mr. Nakachinda said the cutting down of trees near the source has reduced the water which was previously over a meter to zero point 9 meters.
He said the National Heritage Conservation Commission has also advised against the drilling of boreholes around the area.
Mr. Nakachinda said it has also been observed that mining activities also have potential to affect the water source.
He said a harmonised assessment by all line ministries will ensure development in the District and at the same time safeguard the water source.
