The daughter of the truck driver who ploughed into four police officers on Melbourne’s Eastern Freeway thought he was going to kill someone if he got behind the wheel on the day of the crash, a court has heard.

Key points:

  • Harpreet Bajwa said her father was afraid he would be sacked on the day of the crash
  • Mohinder Singh is expected to testify against his boss Simiona Tuteru who is facing 82 charges
  • Police alleged he should not have allowed Singh to drive on the day of the crash

Mohinder Singh was high and severely sleep deprived when he veered into an emergency lane where the officers had pulled over Porsche driver Richard Pusey, killing all four officers.

Singh was jailed for 22 years and is now expected to testify against his Connect Logistics manager Simiona Tuteru, who is fighting manslaughter charges.

At a Melbourne Magistrates’ Court hearing to determine whether Mr Tuteru should stand trial, Singh’s daughter Harpreet Bajwa said her father was worried he was going to be sacked on the day of the crash.

She told him not to go to a work meeting because she did not think he was fit to drive.

“His eyes were racing and his pupils were bigger and he seemed pretty terrified and couldn’t stop speaking.

“I knew there was something wrong with him that day.”

Manager facing 82 charges including manslaughter

The court heard it was not unusual for Mohinder Singh to talk about ghosts and witches.

Mr Tuteru is facing 82 charges, including four counts of manslaughter, as a result of the crash that claimed the lives of Constables Glen Humphris and Joshua Prestney, Senior Constable Kevin King and Leading Senior Constable Lynette Taylor in April last year.

Police allege Mr Tuteru should not have let Singh drive on the day of the crash.

Singh pleaded guilty to eight charges, including culpable driving causing death and drug trafficking.

Richard Pusey, who filmed the dead and dying police officers on the freeway, has completed his 10-month sentence for outraging public decency and other offences, but remains in custody on unrelated charges.
