Prince Harry’s views on the British royal household’s approach to mental health were thrown into the spotlight during his bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey
Prince Harry’s views on the British royal household’s approach to mental health were thrown into the spotlight during his bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey earlier this year.
It was during the emotional tell-all that he and his wife, Meghan, indicated that a lack of support was part of their reasoning for stepping back as senior royals.
Now the Duke of Sussex and legendary interviewer have teamed up again for a new documentary series looking at mental and emotional wellbeing around the world.
Here’s what we know about it so far.
What is The Me You Can’t See?
The Me You Can’t See is the title of the docuseries co-created and produced by Prince Harry and Oprah Winfrey.
In a preview on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s Archewell Foundation website, The Me You Can’t See is described as a multi-part documentary featuring “illuminating stories that help lift the veil on the current state of our mental health and emotional wellbeing”.
Prince Harry said in a statement that the COVID-19 pandemic has shed a new light on the importance of mental health and ways to work through it. Youtube The Me You Can’t See — Official Trailer | Apple TV+
“The majority of us carry some form of unresolved trauma, loss, or grief, which feels — and is — very personal,” he said.
“Yet the last year has shown us that we are all in this together, and my hope is that this series will show there is power in vulnerability, connection in empathy, and strength in honesty.”
Previews feature historical footage from the funeral of Harry’s mother, Princess Diana, hinting that he may discuss the impact her death had on him.
Harry was barely a teenager when she died.
It’s not the first time Prince Harry has publicly expressed his passion for mental health support.
It was a topic that came up repeatedly in Oprah’s interview with Harry and wife Meghan, and he has advocated for breaking down stigma around mental health through his links with the Invictus Games and Heads Together, the mental health initiative of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
“To make that decision to receive help is not a sign of weakness,” Prince Harry says in the trailer for the new series.
Who’s in the docuseries?
As well as Prince Harry and Oprah, The Me You Can’t See is set to feature actress Glenn Close, musician Lady Gaga (real name Stefani Germanotta), sportspeople DeMar DeRozan, Virginia Fuchs and Langston Galloway, and young Syrian refugee Fawzi, to name a few.
The trailer shows clips of Meghan Markle, but it’s not clear whether she will feature in the program individually.
According to Apple TV+, the series’ impressive list of producers “partnered with 14 accredited and respected experts and organisations from around the world to help shed light on different pathways to treatment” for mental health challenges.
How can I watch it?
