Zambia has recorded 9-hundred and 88 new confirmed cases of COVID -19 and 9 deaths in the last 24-hours.

Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary – Technical Services Kennedy Malama says the new cases are out of 10-thousand 9-hundred and 23 tests conducted giving a 9-percent positivity.

He says this brings the cumulative number of confirmed cases recorded to date to 98-thousand 3-hundred and 76.

 

Dr. Malama says Lusaka province has accounted for the highest numbers of new cases at 4-hundred and 76 and Muchinga with the lowest number at 8.

And Dr. Malama says the 9 deaths recorded in the last 24-hours are the highest number recorded since February this year.

In a statement to ZNBC News in Lusaka, Dr. Malama said Lusaka recorded the highest deaths at five, Copperbelt 3 and North-Western province 1.

He said the age range of the deceased was 16-82 years.

Dr. Malama added that the cumulative number of COVID-19 related deaths recorded to date now stands at 1-thousand 2-hundred and 97.

He said there are currently 4-thousand 5-hundred and 65 active cases of which 4-thousand 3-hundred and 66 are under community management and 199 are admitted to Covid isolation facilities.

The PS said 70 new admissions were made in the last 24-hours which is an unprecedented figure.

He said among those currently under admission, 145 are on Oxygen therapy and 15 are in critical condition.

Dr. Malama reiterated the need to ride on the directives on Covid-19 health measures to change the narrative.

He revealed that government will now be moving ahead to open up the new Lusaka specialized hospital tomorrow, which will provide an extra 160 beds for patients.

The PS said all Provinces have been triggered to ramp up preparedness and response as the situation is unusual.
