The Millers Association of Zambia -MAZ- has dispelled fears of market price distortions arising from the authorised export of maize and mealie meal.
Government has authorized the export of 1-million 1-hundred and 77-thousand 5-hundred metric tonnes of maize.
MAZ President Andrew Chintala says price distortions will not arise because the authorised exports are a regulated arrangement.
He says there were consultations between government and sector players before the announced quantity of maize was authorized for export.
Mr. Chintala has told ZNBC news, the commodity authorised for export is from the ascertained tradable quantities of excess maize in the Country.
He said millers are grateful with government’s decision and do NOT expect abrupt change of the policy to run the agriculture sector as a business.
Mr. Chintala however notes that this policy direction calls for structured markets for maize and mealie meal exports.
He said having structured markets is what will create stability and predictability in the supply chain.
