Chief CHANJE of the Chewa people in Chipangali District says most farmers in his chiefdom and chief CHIKUWE’s chiefdom are not able to sell their maize to the Food Reserve Agency because they agency does not have grain bags.
Chief CHANJE says this has left many farmers being stranded with their maize at FRA- depots while they agency waits for grain bags.
He says some farmers have been stuck with their Maize for close to two months.
Chief CHANJE says some vendors have taken advantage of the situation and are buying maize cheaply.
He says government should address the issue of empty grain bags and purchase the remaining maize.
This is contained in a statement issued by the traditional leader and made available to ZNBC news in Chipata.
Meanwhile the Food Reserve Agency -FRA- has with immediate effect resumed the purchasing of maize already delivered to various satellite depots countrywide.
FRA Public Relations Coordinator JOHN CHIPANDWE says the agency will not buy any new deliveries.
Mr. CHIPANDWE says the buying follows concerns from farmers that delivered white maize to satellite depots that FRA could not buy after having reached its target.
He has also appealed to farmers to exercise patience in the delivery of empty grain bags as they are delivered when they are received from suppliers.
