Zambia Railways Limited -ZRL- has officially commissioned an In-land Port at Senkobo in Kazungula district.
Speaking during the launch, Zambia Railways Board Chairperson, Wala Chabala, said the in-land port will enhance operations and efficiency in the transportation of bulk cargo by rail.
Dr. Chabala said the port has already resulted in increased tonnage from the initial two thousand, last year, to eight thousand tonnes of coal, per month, from the Senkobo port to Ndola.
He said ZRL is hopeful that the in-land port will attract more customers and further increase the tonnage of goods to be transported by rail, thereby reducing pressure on the roads.
And ZRL Chief Executive Officer, Christopher Musonda, says the company will continue being innovative to improve its operations.
Meanwhile, ZRL Southern Regional Manager, Joel Chilufya, has described the Senkobo in-land port as a game changer.
Mr. Chilufya said his workforce is ready and equal to the task of meeting the demand, and further increasing the tonnage being transported by rail per month.
And Zambia Railway Workers Union of Zambia President, Nathan Zulu, has appealed to the Board to support and develop such capital projects.
Mr. Zulu has also appealed for the recapitalization of Zambia Railways Limited.
