Government owes petroleum products suppliers over 524 million United States dollars.

Energy Minister PETER KAPALA says government can only reduce the cost of fuel when there is a reduction on the international market.

He said government has given contracted Oil Marketing Companies and supplier’s up to November 15th to comply and give fifty percent of fuel to be transported by local transporters or risk termination of the waiver.

Mr. KAPALA said government is looking at restructuring INDENI Petroleum Refinery Limited and Tazama pipeline limited with the view to reducing the cost of petroleum products.

He said from June to August 2021 four thousand one hundred and eighty four road tankers were used to import petrol and diesel of which one thousand six hundred and ninety-two were Zambian road tankers representing compliance of forty percent.

Mr. KAPALA said while government policy is to have fifty percent government contracted fuel transported by Zambians, there have been lapses.

He said this in parliament when he delivered a ministerial statement on the non participation of Zambians in the fuel transportation following a point of order by Nyimba Member of Parliament MENYANI ZULU.
